Artist Profile

Chris_Artist Chris Balthrop is a lifelong resident of Oconee County Georgia. Chris graduated with his BBA from the University of Georgia in 2000, and competed his MS in CIS from Nova Southeastern University in 2005.  His interest in photography was sparked while growing up by observing his father Jerry, and brother Bryant use photography as a hobby.  Chris was also influenced and inspired by the work of his 2nd cousin Jim Shaw, who was a professional photographer in Atlanta.  Being visually impaired limits some of the activities that Chris might have otherwise participated in but this also gave him further motivation and inspiration in his photography.  Chris specializes in nature and scenic photography but enjoys any opportunity he can get to take photos and learn.  Through his landscape photography he hopes to capture the beauty of the location he’s at and bring that beauty to others, especially to those that may be less fortunate to have the opportunity to see such sights due to disability or other reasons.  He believes that photography has the power to inspire, relax, motivate and convey various emotions and feelings.

Chris is currently a Systems Administrator at the University of Georgia’s College of Environment and Design’s School of Environmental Design and is also a adjunct instructor for American College of Technology, where he teaches online courses. While not working, Chris is taking distance courses from the New York Institute of Photography.

He has also had a photo published in the book Filters of The Imagination, ISBN: 0795151004, which was published in 2002 by The International Library of Photography.  He is currently working on a photographic coffee table book of the Great Smoky Mountains.

He is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association, and while he is a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, Chris feels that the key to quality photography begins at the camera, and any post processing work should be kept to a minimum unless specific changes are requested by the client.
